From what I've unlocked so far, there are new recipes and the requirements for the old recipes are different (but it looks like all of the old alchemy creatures are still available eventually once your level is high enough). I don't know if creatures unlock at the same level as before.

If you have ten of the same companion or ten of the same battle stone, you can melt them down for 10 EXP, or you can also melt down a hatchling or adult creature for 10 EXP. To figure out if you have at least ten of a companion or battle stone, click on Smelt Companions or Smelt Battle Stones. Melting down companions, battle stones, or creatures takes 15 minutes. You get the EXP as soon as you add the thing to be smelted.

You need 100 EXP to unlock Level 1 recipes, 100 more EXP to unlock Level 2 recipes, 500 more EXP to unlock Level 3 recipes, 1000 more EXP to unlock Level 4 recipes, and 1500 more EXP (? - not quite there yet) to unlock Level 5 recipes. Ingredients can be found by Scouring, as battle rewards (choose Lost Fields to get a mixture of all elemental demons and thus of all ingredients), or as possible rewards from Veridan. Essences are the result of melting down either companions, battle stones, or creatures.

Note: Battle stones can all be found by battling, so you may wish to save your ingredients for other recipes.
