i think it’s pretty stupid that we have to help out our dragons during scours. i usually send mine off for 24 hours, which in reality is ~48 hours or so with the added time they just get stuck waiting for me to help
i’d really like a more passive approach to the scours since the “help out” feature is a really annoying feature

Same here. Sometimes I forget I had a dragon scouring too! This is the main reason I don't do scours anymore because I am not going to stick around on this site for 24 hours in case my dragon gets uppity then, to top it all off, you tell it to do something only for it to turn around and do something else!
I mean, I like the idea of scours but not the idea that a scour that should only take a few hours can end up being an entire day because the bugger gets into trouble and you don't know about it and it can't figure it out itself then rarely does what you tell it to anyways!
